  • All EPO organized live events scheduled up until 31 December 2020 are now expected to take place online, unless indicated otherwise.
  • Oral proceedings in opposition scheduled until 15 September 2021 are held by video conference (unless special reasons prevent this)
  • Oral proceedings in examination will continue to be held by videoconference until 15 September 2021(unless special reasons prevent this).
  • From 1 January 2021 boards may conduct oral proceedings by VICO even without the agreement of the parties concerned, as has now been made clear in the new Article 15a RPBA adopted by the Boards of Appeal Committee. Since the new provision merely clarifies an existing possibility, boards may adapt their practice as regards dispensing with the need to obtain the agreement of the parties concerned even before the date of its entry into force. The parties will be sent a communication informing them in good time before the date of the oral proceedings of any change from an in-person to a VICO format.

  • Operating as normal
  • No physical meetings until further notice.
  • Extension of deadlines
    • Upon request, deadlines set by the Office can be extended. However, statutory deadlines such as priority deadlines and payment deadlines cannot be extended.
    • For designs and trademarks, an extension of at least two months will be granted.
    • For patents, a two-month extension will be granted.
    • The Office must have received the request for a deadline extension before the deadline expires.

  • No decision regarding extension of deadlines has been made.
